What made you smile today?⁣

Our Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft has observed the so-called Happy Face Crater in the south polar region of Mars for almost a decade. The smiling face you see in the image demonstrates color variations in the bright frost and darker red ground on the Red Planet, due to thermal erosion and the sun modifying carbon dioxide to create round surface patterns. Measuring changes throughout the Martian year helps scientists understand long-term climate trends and the annual turnover of polar frost on Mars. ⁣
