Photo by @amivitale / Storm clouds gather over the peaks of the Matthews Range in northern Kenya, home to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), the first ever community-owned and community-run elephant sanctuary in Africa. In the 1990s elephant populations here had been poached to near extinction. Thanks to community-based conservation, elephants have made an extraordinary comeback. Today, there are more than 8,700 elephants in the area, making it Kenya’s second largest population of elephants. Nature is resilient, when we give it a chance.
