People are enveloped in hazy air as they walk through a public square in Skopje, North Macedonia, one of the most polluted cities in Europe. ⁣

“You can smell and taste the pollution the moment you walk out of the door. Even on a clear day, there’s this poisonous tang in the air. You know it’s damaging your health and your children’s health, but you feel helpless to do anything about it,” explains Jasminka Markovska, a mother of three in Skopje.⁣

Tuesday is the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. ⁣
⁣
Worldwide, nine out of ten people breathe polluted air, which kills nearly seven million people every year, according to @WHO. Air pollution is an environmental risk to human health and despite being a preventable problem, has detrimental impacts on climate, biodiversity and ecosystems and more.⁣

Everyone can take to help including by walking or taking public transport instead of driving. ⁣
