Learning how to read and write should be a significant milestone for everyone. Yet, millions of adults and young people around the world lack basic literacy skills.

The pandemic and the rapid shift to distance learning amid school closures posed new challenges, magnifying the inequalities in access to meaningful literacy learning opportunities, including in terms of internet connectivity and electricity, infrastructure, and the ability to engage with technology.

has also highlighted the importance of having basic digital skills to access life-saving information. But over half of the world’s population lack those skills.

“As we mark let’s renew our commitment to equitable education for all,” said Secretary-General @antonioguterres on Wednesday.
