Greg Lynn faces court over alleged murder of Russell Hill, Carol Clay

Double murder accused Greg Lynn sat unmoving during his brief court appearance on Friday morning, hours after he was charged over the alleged killings of missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay.

The 55-year-old father of three, dressed in a grey jumper with clean-cut hair, appeared at Sale Magistrates Court via video link from the nearby regional police station.

Court documents released to the press show police alleged Mr Lynn, an airline pilot from Caroline Springs, murdered Mr Hill, 74, and Ms Clay, 73, at Wonnangatta on March 20, 2020.

The murder charges followed three days of questioning by missing person squad detectives after specialist police were flown in via helicopter to arrest Mr Lynn at a remote Gippsland campsite about 5.30pm on Monday.

During a late-night press conference held soon after charges were laid on Thursday, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said he hoped the charges would help provide some closure to the families of the missing campers.

Assistant Commissioner Hill also praised the efforts of police involved in the investigation, labelling their efforts extraordinary, as they prepare to spend the coming days searching rugged terrain for the remains of Mr Hill and Ms Clay.

Mr Hill, from Drouin, and Ms Clay, from Pakenham, vanished from the Wonnangatta Valley in the state’s high country in March last year before their campsite, damaged by fire, was discovered by others.

Investigators are still searching for a trailer, which officers believe Mr Lynn may have sold on online marketplace Gumtree in the months after the alleged murder.
